October is the best month to be in Burgaw. The heat breaks in late September. The farm stands hit their peak with sweet potatoes, pumpkins, and dried corn. The light gets low and golden in a way that makes the pine forests look like a painting. The trails are fully accessible. There is no bad time of day to be outside.
The farm stands at their best
Pender County is serious sweet potato country. The harvest runs September through November and the roadside stands are loaded. Look for cured sweet potatoes - they've been stored for a few weeks after harvest and are sweeter for it. The freshly dug ones are good too, just different.
Pumpkins, gourds, dried Indian corn, winter squash, collards, turnips. October is when the stands look like calendar photographs. Go on a Saturday morning and bring cash.
The best time on the trails
The river trail and Holly Shelter are both at their best in October. The hardwoods in the bottomland have some color, the mosquitoes are gone, and the temperatures are perfect for walking. You won't need to start at 7am to beat the heat. Just go when you want to.
Moore's Creek Battlefield is particularly beautiful in fall - the cypress and tupelo turn a deep red-orange before dropping their needles, and the swamp takes on a warm, amber quality that reads nothing like summer.
What else is happening
Burgaw has a Blueberry Festival in spring, but the fall brings its own lower-key agricultural events - check with the county extension office and local social accounts for anything happening at farms or community centers. These events are usually not well-publicized outside the county and are better for it.
