Downtown Burgaw

A main street that still feels like one.

The kind of town square that has become rare — a working courthouse, local shops with actual character, and sidewalks worth strolling. Best on a Friday afternoon when the energy is right.

Burgaw's downtown is anchored by the 1937 Pender County Courthouse, a handsome piece of New Deal-era civic architecture that still handles real county business every weekday. The streets radiating out from the square have the kind of unhurried mix you find in towns that haven't been discovered yet — hardware stores next to small restaurants, local banks, a barbershop that has been in the same spot for decades.

The best way to see it is on foot with no agenda. Park near the courthouse, walk the perimeter of the square, then head down either side street and see what's open. Friday afternoons are the liveliest, when people are finishing the week and local spots fill up early. Saturday mornings have their own rhythm — quieter, more deliberate.

Unlike many small-town downtowns that have hollowed out and been replaced by antique shops and gift boutiques, Burgaw's square is still functional. That's a feature, not a bug. It means you're walking through a real place, not a preserved one.

Practical tips

  • Park anywhere near the courthouse — free, no time limits on weekends
  • The farmers market runs on select Saturdays in season; check locally for the current schedule
  • Many shops close by 5pm on weekdays; plan accordingly
  • The courthouse grounds are worth a slow walk even if everything else is closed
